Jessica Calvello 2001

This interview was with The one and only Jessica Calvello!! She was the voice actor of Cutey Honey from the show "Cutey Honey!", we call them interviews questions, becuase we do not ask them in person, and that is what they are. THANKS SO MUCH JESSICA CALVELLO!
Now on with the questions!
(One more thing! There are 2 Jessica's , one was (me)the interviewer and the other is Jessica Calvello. So We had to change a few things around^_^)

(Animestation) 1.Why did you start up voice acting?
(Jessica Calvello) Well, my first job was in 1996 - summer of, to be exact - with ADVfilms! To be honest, I had never even thought of pursuing voice acting as a career. I mean, I knew it was something I wanted to get into, but I always thought I would find more success in my stage work first. When I started with ADV, I began to realize that this voice acting thing could very well be a career for me. When I came to NYC a year ago, I had 15 films on my resume, all due to ADVfilms and I quickly landed jobs with Taj Productions (Pokemon), UBO Productions (BATTLESEED - www. othervision.net), Spittoons Productions (Alley Cats), Central Park Media (Virgin Fleet) and the newest credit with Scifi.com, the Flash animated series, Chi Chian in which I voice the characters of Sakayoto, The Siamese Robot and the pink metalic floating teddy bear, Dr. Yoshimoto. When I got to NYC, it really helped that ADVfilms had given me such a great start to the productive career that I now have in the VA biz!

(Animestation)2.Did you ever get scared when you were going to get some recording done in the studio? Maybe thinking that you would make a mistake?

(Jessica Calvello)At first, yes I did a LOT! And I was nervous. Sometimes I would choke up, or close my throat off - not meaning to, of course - you know like when you get a lump in your throat, well, voice acting is REALLY hard when you have a lump in your throat from nerves. And then when you get nervous your chords also get all contricted...ugh...not fun. But the nerves wore off very soon. After you are warmed up, the character kind-of takes over and the nerves melt away. You concentrate on the character's voice and work to maintain continuity and pitch, and all of that stuff. It soon becomes that you just don't have time for nerves! Plus, after voicing a few films, you just don't get nervous anymore. You know you will keep saying the line until it is right. I mean, you have chances to screw up. It isn't live theater.

(Animestation) 3.Whats your favorite Anime?

(Jessica Calvello)The Last Unicorn.

(Animestation)4. Whats your favorite Anime Female and Male character?

(Jessica Calvello) The Last Unicorn! That is female, of course and male.......hmmmm......well, I sort-of have a thing for Gendo. I know, I know! That sounds sick, but I think he is twisted in a y and disturbing kind-of way...

(Animestation)5.Did, or do You have a hero or someone to look up to?

(Jessica Calvello)Wonder Woman. God, I LOVED Wonder Woman! Sometimes I would turn in circles and wait for those red lights to flash so I could become her, but instead I would just end up throwing up and falling on the ground. OK, so I was weird.....

(Animestation)6. What are your main hobbies?

(Jessica Calvello) Acting. I audition all the time and am always working on something theatrical. That goes for singing and acting on the stage as well as voice acting. In the spare time that I have, I am pretty obsessed with my fanmail and I make beaded jewelry. I also kickbox! Hiiiiiii-yaaaaa!!!!!

(Animestation)7. What Anime Character that you have played are you most like and why?

(Jessica Calvello) Hmmmm - this is always a tough one. There is a little of me in them all. Here is the breakdown. I'll name the character and then the similarity between us: Fam - silly, Hicaru - Flighty, Princess Minerva - LOUD, Monet (BATTLESEED) - Loyal, Cutey Honey - Android (just kidding!!!!!) actually, Honey-chan and I are both VERY honest, Yuri - Sweet (ok, so I was fishing for a similarity there!), Barbera - Dominatrix (oops, did I forget to mention that in my hobbies? Just kidding), DragonHalf - Part Dragon - ok, this isn't working out like I thought.....Well, I guess if I had to pick one, it would be Honey-chan. She has a good heart, a good soul, she would die for the people she loved and she puts herself before others, but my GOD don't piss her off!!!!!!!

(Animestation)10. What would you say to people who did not know what the anime "Cute Honey" was?

(Jessica Calvello) Cutey Honey??? Oh dear me, well that has happened to me before. Not everyone knows the Kisaragi's! I guess I would say to please check out the series! The animation is beautiful and the story lines have depth. Plus, I was cast by Go Nagai himself to be the voice of Honey, so definitely check out the dub as well as the sub, because the dub rocks, too!

(Animestation)11.Last question! What would you say to someone who would like to voice act?

(Jessica Calvello) Persistance. Anyone in the industry will tell you that. And the industry is tough. REALLY tough. You need certain tools: demo tape; character and commercial tapes, resumes with your work; and not just anime, but ALL voice experience, and you NEED experience, you need contacts to send your info to, you need access to auditions and you must LIVE in the area where there are anime studios, that is if anime is what you want to do. If you just want to voice act, you still have to know where the studios are that record for such things and be near them. The voice work will NOT come to you, you HAVE to go to IT!

(Thanks again Jessica Calvello for a great interview!)
